Negative expected progress?

I'm new to the role and I'm calculating the progress of current year 11.

We are looking at % who make 3 or 3+ levels progress so I'm not sure that this matters as it doesn't affect those headline figures but I was interested....

Is it possible to make negative progress?

e.g.

KS2 Level 4 should get a C...

 

C= 3 levels progress

D=2 LP

E=1 LP

F=0 LP

G= -1 ???

Certainly possible, as your example shows, and results like this are plotted in the transition matrices.

The tables only contain percentages making expected and more than expected progress, not any sort of average progress measure for a cohort, so, if forecasting what's going to be published is what matters, the point is moot.

We do calculate the figures for everyone, not just count, so we can look at average progress of various groups for internal monitoring and analysis. That means that sometimes (not too often, thank goodness!) there is the odd negative figure next to an individual's name.

I tend to get a few negatives for pupils who do not get a GCSE grade, normally those who attend colleges or PRU type of establishments. Unless you can take them off roll before the January census you are stuck with them. (An interesting article about schools who do this in the Guardian yesterday)
