Hidden windows shares using SMB on OS X Server

Hello,

 

I saw an unusual issue whilst going through my AD-OD integration. When i was setting up some hidden shares on the OS X Server, each time i added one with a $ at the end, the windows 2003 server could not connect to it. It said the network provider didn't accept the given path. Upon removing the $ it then connected fine. This was the case for all shares with the $ sign at the end. Has anyone else seen this problem or just me.

 

I wouldn't put it past just being me as the last 4 weeks have been a nightmare on the OS X side of things.

did you add $ to the sharename when you created it?

samba doesn't require a dollar to be added to the end of a sharename because it's rather pointless - the dollar only 'hides' the shares from windows clients, *nix clients can freely browse 'hidden' dollar shares.

Actually if you edit the /private/etc/smb.conf file directly and add the option:

 

browseable=no

 

to your shares, people won't be able to browse (see) the shares when looking at their network in Windows. Same as it is in Linux really.
