We've recently signed up to Adobe Creative Cloud and students are trying to access the Photoshop (web) version via a chromebook (these are the Dell 3100 with 4Gb RAM) and the canvas doesn't load.

We've also tried a Chromebook with an i3 / 8Gb RAM too. The canvas loads but when a background is removed or anything more complicated than that the interface grinds to a halt.

Does anyone else have experience (either positive or negative) of Chromebooks running the web version of photoshop? Are we basically running really crap chromebooks?

We gave it a quick try via a free trial account when the web version was announced. It seemed to work okay, at least for basic stuff like opening an image and using the paint brush tool. This was on some older machines, too - I think we even had it working on one of our 12-year-old ChromeOS Flex laptops. Google were promoting the "Chromebook Plus" a few months ago specifically for use with Photoshop - I don't know if you can get hold of a Chromebook Plus-specification device to try it on?

Ah thanks, not heard of a Chromebook Plus before will look to see what specs they are.

I think it might be best to say that standard Chromebooks don't work with Photoshop in the same way that Windows / mac devices work.

Indeed - the promotion that Google were doing (were they including a three-month free trial of Photoshop with Chromebook Plsu devices?) seemed to emphsise you would need a snazzier, newer Chromebook Plus to properly run Photoshop. However, I seem to remember looking at prices / specifications and there were devices available for about the same as standard Chromebooks, so it seems like more of a "get this year's model of Chromebook for it to be able to run Photoshop" sort of thing. Something to check if you're buying Chromebooks this year, does it meet Chromebook Plus specifications.
