Rename iPad in intune

This should be simple, but doesn't appear to be!

 

Is there a way to rename iPads in intune? There is a rename option which works, but then the next time it checks in the name from the enrollment profile over writes it.

 

The enrollment profile has a couple of options - At the moment we have it set to trolley letter - serial number, so they are identifiable at least, but ideally I'd like to add the iPad number in there as well.

 

You can't have a blank name on the enrollment profile, so this seems to always overwrite it. I don't mind naming them manually if it actually stays.

There is a slider above that called "Apply device name template". What happens if you set that to no?

Thanks, that seems to do it. So easy to miss the obvious among all the other settings.
