Hi All

We're seeking an expert to help set up our school dashboard using Arbor and the BI Connector. Ideally, we’d like to use Google Looker Studio, but we're open to exploring Microsoft Power BI as well.

If you have relevant experience or know someone who might be interested, please get in touch!

Best Regards

Setting up Power Bi with the Arbor Snowflake connector is really straight forward.

Sorry, possibly drifting off-topic slightly from the original post: Snowflake - is that becoming a common choice as the database to store data for Looker Studio / PowerBI projects? Any idea roughly how much it costs to run for, say, a single school-sized database? I've just been doing some work where I've been extracting some data from a service via its REST API and writing that to a Snowflake database. It seems to work well, and Snowflake has a nice user interface for running / testing SQL statements, which was very handy. I was thinking to maybe sign up for a test account of some sort, but can't quite figure out the pricing - I see it's credit-based, but any idea how much credit is taken up by simply writing data to a database?

Also, would you happen to have any experience with getting data via webhooks into Snowflake? A quick Google suggests, I think, simply writing a Python (Flask) based web server to handle webhooks and running that from within Snowflake's environment. Again, I'm guessing that takes up some compute credit, not sure how much. Otherwise, the solution seems to be to use third-party tools / connectors to write data - is that how the Arbor connector works?

Snowflake is not a great a solution for google / looker as no native connector that's fit for purpose but works well with Power BI. Arbors connector is simply comprehensive access to all your MIS data (well most of it) easily in Power BI - its via snowflake but you don't need to do anything to have access to your data. But you know you have connectivity via a robust scalable data source. You can then go for full custom data warehouse and you then have your own snowflake instance but again with MIS data already avaiable within that. You can then bring in data as you see fit - you can drag and drop files in it web UI in its simplest form which is useful for things that don't have an api. Because it a data warehouse it is efficient to run and wouldn't cost much for one off imports etc - Arbor has some fair use allowance built in but its great value for money and you simply couldn't do it yourself for less.

As Sefton says connecting to the connector is really easy as a native connector in Power BI and then just some credentials etc - but obviously building your dashboards can be a hours work or a life time depending on the need and requirements ! I would recommend downloading Arbors Template PBIT file as while the dashboards aren't that helpful they have setup many of the relationships and created some key measures for CORE data so you can be creating visuals in minutes rather than having to work on your data model etc. Its certainly a great starting point if you are relatively new to the Power BI game . . .
