Meeting digital and technology standards in schools and colleges

Is this a compliance item?, in the same way as What Schools Must Publish Online?

 

It splits into 11 different documents that again refer to others

A lot of it is very vague and left open ended, no obvious checklist of items that should be answered

In some cases it mandates items that would be difficult without significant Financial investment for little or no real world gain, for example

 

Wifi

How to meet the standard

You should ask your supplier or in-house support team to provide a wireless solution that uses the Wi-Fi 6 standard.

There has been lots of chat about these on here, and a few updates. Someone on here did have a template that had all the entries that you could mark against. ANME have one on their site.

 

My understanding is that they are guidelines, minimum standards and to help schools look ahead. So, if you are starting a project and it does not even meet the guidance in these documents, you would need a very good reason why not. They are not saying you have to meet them now, like in the case of WiFi, but you should be aiming for it and have a plan, so you can get the financial investment lined up.

 

It would show your management that you are:

1) looking out wider than your 4 walls and taking Government advice on board

2) planning to move forward

3) self evaluating

 

Also, someone at some point is going to stumble across these standards and raise them in a meeting or bring them to you and ask where you are at with them. Having a plan, or reasoning why they are not met, would give you a gold star as well as not being caught on the hop and looking reactionary rather than proactive.

Its a guideline, something for the schools to aspire to meeting. It says so in the first paragraph.

 

"These standards should be used as guidelines to support your school or college use the right digital infrastructure and technology."

 

Wheras if you look at the welsh gov filtering standards we've just been sent, it is a non negotiable instruction in the first paragraph.

 

"Schools should create and maintain a safe learning environment for children."

They are guidelines, but they're also excellent base minimum expectations. No one is going to be investigating you if you don't meet these standards, but if you're a school or college who doesn't... well, it won't look good on your org and it'll leave you weaker, digitally.
