Visitor Wireless Access

Hi All,

How do you offer internet access for visitors? At the moment we have a visitor SSID but it's hidden to keep students off so we need to give visitors access by typing in the SSID, selecting security and then entering a generic username and password for them to have access. Obviously this isn't ideal with the number of visitors we get.

Staff also have access this way and they also type in a username and password but I would like them to authenticate with AD.

We use Aruba Central and our ISP is Schools Broadband. I assume a new VLAN is needed and of course filtering is needed.

It will depend on the ability of the systems you have. We have a couple of ways.

First is pre-prepared codes given out by reception. They join our standard Wi-Fi and the code is valid for 24 hours from first use.

Second is through a guest voucher system that we can delegate out to certain departments to create. They join a special SSID, state they are a guest, enter the code and away they go.

Third is a sponsor system where they log on to the special SSID, state they are a guest and pick an email from a list of staff who can authorise guests to jump on.

 

This is all managed by Cloudpath, which is part of the Ruckus eco system.

What kind of wireless system do you have? If I remember correctly, there is a basic guest facility built into Aruba Mobility Controllers, where you can register guests and issue them with a unique time limited username and password. There's something built into Instants as well. If you want something more advanced, you'll need something along the lines of Clearpass but that's excessive for just a guest network.
