Forgive my lack of knowledge on this, still new to Smoothwall as we've taken over a Primary School that uses an on-premise device.

The alerts feature that triggers when dodgy searches happen seems to have stopped sending them out recently. I've checked under Reports --> Settings --> Output Settings and made sure the settings look right for Office 365. I've reset the email account in use to be sure it hasn't expired a password somewhere, but nothing sends, even when using the Test button.

Am I in the right place? What are correct settings for using the 365 SMTP service these days? Can you still with the deprecation of Basic Authentication?

Cheers

From https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/exchange/mail-flow-best-practices/how-to-set-up-a-multifunction-device-or-application-to-send-email-using-microsoft-365-or-office-365

Option 1: Authenticate your device or application directly with a Microsoft 365 or Office 365 mailbox, and send mail using SMTP AUTH client submission

Note

This option isn't compatible with Security defaults in Microsoft Entra ID. We recommend using Modern Authentication when connecting with our service. For more information about OAuth, see Authenticate an IMAP, POP or SMTP connection using OAuth.

You must also verify that SMTP AUTH is enabled for the mailbox being used. SMTP AUTH is disabled for organizations created after January 2020 but can be enabled per-mailbox. For more information, see Enable or disable authenticated client SMTP submission (SMTP AUTH) in Exchange Online.

Although SMTP AUTH is available now, we announced Exchange Online will permanently remove support for Basic authentication with Client Submission (SMTP AUTH) in September 2025. We strongly encourage customers to move away from using Basic authentication with SMTP AUTH as soon as possible. For more Information about alternative options, please see our announcement here- https://techcommunity.microsoft.com/t5/exchange-team-blog/exchange-online-to-retire-basic-auth-for-client-submission-smtp/ba-p/4114750

So no changes yet to SMTP access.

So...? It shouldn't have just stopped working? What method have others used to get this set up with Office 365? Can someone describe the steps as that link above is a rabbit hole of links to links to other page links. Anyone got a simple guide?

It was me :( The password had expired on the account, and yes I'd set a new one. But stupid me had left the tick box on to require changing it at next logon

I've configured the account via Powershell to not expire the password, but I'll need to this towards September 2025 on how to set up OAuth with SMTP for this
