Its just come to light that although our latest new AD users are synchronizing to office 365 with the correct email address/UPN suffix under 'users' , all the users have a primary email address of our onmicrosoft.com domain causing email issues.

Although the UPN is correct in AD, anyone know why their primary email addresses are showing as the onmicrosoft.com email address and not our official domain?

Older users are unaffected.

Is the UPN and the Email field correct in AD?

Do these users have any ProxyAddresses set?

UPN Suffix is correct in AD with our default external domain name.

Only proxy address in attributes is x500 exchange labs administrative group, as had hybrid setup so i'm thinking its when migrated all mailboxes and stopped creating local mail enabled accounts with proxy address now that everything is migrated?

Did i miss a step to make then always use the main UPN rather than still using local exchange server ?

On the Azure AD Connect box, find the synchronization service app and dig through sync logs to see if anything shows there

UPN is only used for email address if proxyAddresses doesnt have an SMTP:email@address entry so I'd be tempted to try one just to see what happens.

when you look at a user with an AzureAD cmdlet vs an Exo cmdlet, is the email address still onmicrosoft? could someting else be using the email address ? contacts?
