How is it that are can get a consoultant in for 5 day at a cost £2250 to help with my newtork migration and yet RM forest route migration costs £2500. But the this guy we had in was miles ahead of the RM guy Cisco, Exchange, SQL and AD.

there is less competition in the marketplace when it comes to RM accredited engineers... simple supply and demand ;)

morale of the story... become RM accredited rather than Cisco, MS, etc.

Supply i get, but demand ?

didn't realise there was a demand for RM expertise at 500 quid a day...

I personally would specialize or become accredited in an area which can secure regular income. Not sure RM accreditation fits the bill.

£500 per day is cheaper than many consultants!

500 pound may be the low end when you compare it against what a cisco gold partner might charge for implementation services or what an Oracle guru may charge for design services, but this is RM .

I also thing it's telling that the specialisms command the really high rates, whereas the jack of all trades tend to be in this £450-£500 region. with much more competition.

Many disciplines can command high rates, it really depends on the skillset of the individual contractors or the org providing the consultation services. Competition does play a part, as mentioned Cisco accredited partners have that status through specialisation to charge high rates, whereas an individual contractor with a CCNP is facing stiffer competition. But an experienced CCIE may find they can charge higher rates because they can stand out from the CCNA/CCNP crowd. Similarly a Cisco storage expert may stand out due to supply and demand. You can't say do RM rather Cisco or Windows because you can't generalise.

self employed contractors that gain most are those with specialisms that can command high rates day in day out on rolling contracts within a single org.

a ccie may be able to charge £1000 a day, but they are usually working on one-off projects moving from org to org. How much easier is it knowing your skills are in demand indefintely and that there are companies who are willing to pay you 800-1000 day in day out for months, sometimes years.

Also large % of RM engineers have cisco, mcse etc etc as RM will pay for it as life long learning is big thing at RM.

But like most business/consultants can get some good engineers and some bad ones.

The RM engineer seemed to be a kid reading thought the commissioning document and I could have done that!!! The guy we had in seem to have a good grasp of most stuff he knew his onions. The company is bassed in Suburbiton London.
