Windows crashes when I plug in Ethernet cable

I've been customising a Windows 11 install and it is working fine and installs everything perfectly off a bootable USB stick.

 

It will only work if I have nothing attached to the ethernet port.

 

So, once I get to the desktop, If I plug in an ethernet cable, it crashes and says a problem has occured and it needs to restart. It then never recovers and loops continuously crashing.

 

I'm thinking some sort of driver issue, however I wonder why this would be happening. If I just use a normal Windows 11 ISO it installs fine and no errors.

 

Has anyone else had this?

I haven’t had this since the days of XP when an ethernet port driver problem seemed to come as standard with too many installs I did. (I was quite often working on donated kit back then so no two were the same) I painfully and slowly had to work my way through likely drivers for the ethernet port until the problems went away.

How odd! We had this exact same issue on a VeryPC desktop with an ASUS motherboard in it. We tried a different Ethernet cable, different Network Socket and even removed the PC and tried it in our workshop and it still crashed when you plugged in an Ethernet cable.

 

We even swapped the motherboard out with another one and it still did it.

 

It turned out to be the PSU - once we swapped the power supply with a new one, the problem went away!

I ended up downloading the latest Realtek Gigabit LAN driver and it has solved the issue from here:

Now I need to test integrating the driver into the Install.

It does sound like a driver issue, especially since it's specific to your customized Windows 11 install. Maybe try manually updating or reinstalling the Ethernet driver to see if that resolves the problem? Sometimes, custom installs can be tricky with hardware compatibility.

Yes it was a driver issue. Several people have had this problem with the Realtek driver and Windows 11 install.
