Which union for centralisation?

I've started a consulation period for centralisation with it to finish on the last day of term!

 

Although i'm in Community Union (AKA Voice) will they back me? Will they support me?

 

Should i be looking at another Union? Would Unison or Unite be better or are they all as good / bad as each other and it really depends on who you get?

Can't comment on that specific Union but I thought most only support you for actions that happen "after" you join them - As in it'd be too late to change now as it's already started being actioned.

 

Obviously it was designed to stop people only signing up after they have an issue etc, so would be worth checking before changing as even if yours may not be as helpful may be the best option you have

Yep this is the case for Unison. I joined Unison a year ago and they have been very very helpful as this year I have needed them. The representation and advice they have given me has been very much appreciated. It's the best for support staff in schools imo. Edited June 8, 2024 by Brax

Thanks for the replies, i just hope that rhe union i'm with will fight my corner as you get Union Reps and Union Reps. Some will fight our corners, others just aren't bothered.

 

Basically instead of looking after one school we are being asked to look after 12 sites (6 each) for the same amount of pay because they don't see it as extra responsibility - they say that we are still doing the same job. If we are that the top of our pay band already we are essentially being centralised with no progression.. oh i forgot to mention, we (IT managers) currently get a little once a week payment to help the central team, they are taking that off us!

 

There is no senior tech role to bridge the gap between techs and IT managers.

Normally they have multiple sessions, some in and some out of work hours. As you'll also get those who are working (e.g. lets say someone on reception) who can't leave to go to the consultation etc

From my experience, the support you get can vary widely within unions, even within the same union. Unison and Unite are solid options with much experience dealing with centralization and restructuring issues. It might be worth reaching out to them to see what kind of support they can offer. Ultimately, it often comes down to the specific representatives you work with. So talking to a few different unions and getting a feel for their responsiveness and approach might help you decide. I just skimmed his most recent responses and some of them are very very good for an AI - not just quoting wikipedia articles.

 

I don't know if I'm more impressed by the passing-as-human answers or annoyed that we are now a training ground for another AI.

Think the AI needs to think more on its profile. Can't see a real person in the US knowing about British Unions etc..

If the consultation period has charted then it's unlikely the new union will let you join anyway.
