As others have said i agree regarding using the DfE Standards its something to hold onto to push your case - i'm looking at bringing all our networking kit in scope and we are talking about 100K moving it from out of scope netgear kit to Ruckus ICX kit. since the requierments on this at the moment is as you replace old kit we can probably phase it over a few years. I've been at my school for 20 years and well when i started they had a single server that mostly did cmis (sercos sims) 3 small IT rooms and no Wifi or connected laptops. Now its totally different and as some one said we are like the 4th service

What about the hardware security updates such the BIOS?

Same as any other BIOS machine onsite. It will be a risk if there is a known exploit. UEFI get updated via MS updates of course (this has happened on our Dells). I cannot remember a time that I visited 300 machines to update the BIOS to their latest version. I applaud you if that is common practice in your environment.

I think you missed my point. If you're running old hardware that is no longer supported, you won't be able to update the BIOS to fix the security issue as the manufacturer won't develop an update.

We do update our devices to the latest version, but deployed and installed automatically. We don't do it manually.

im not missing your point at all. I cannot remember when I last went to ALL my PCs whether supported or not and installed the latest BIOS. UEFI get updated automatically, but BIOS ones do not. I do not have a central BIOS update facility. If I was to learn of an issue and there was no fix then it would be retired.

Yes you are

This is the point. I was replying to you who has hardware with known but unpatched security issues....
