HarryHornby Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Hi All, We've just handed out a few Android tablets to staff. Samsung Galaxy Tab A9. When we use an unrestricted SSID on them, all is well. When we switch to the certificate controlled domain wifi reuiring installation of the Smoothwall cert on the device the tablet shows unable to connect to internet. BUT. If we browse the web we can do so with no issues. so in theory the cert is installed and working fine. Problem is some school apps require confirmation of network connection prior to opening and won't open if they are told there is no connection by the tablet, which is what is happening. we've spoken to Smoothwall and they have confirmed that sites such as connectivitiycheck/gstatic.com/generate_204 are not blocked on the firewall, so in theory Android should be able to create a 204 entry, but it's not. Has anyone come across this before please?
tom_newton Posted April 19, 2024 Posted April 19, 2024 Android is a notoriously tricky customer. You could try our beta android client - it does all the filtering on-device and avoids many of the issues of network based filtering - drop me an email with your details if you are interested.
ibpalle Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 Try a do not filter for just the address 'connectivitycheck.gstatic.com' There is a new category in the software section called Captive Portal which includes the above address and others.

Hi Tom, thank you, will be in touch to explore options.

Hello, Where abouts in Smoothwall am I adding it to not filter, please? I'm new to smoothwall, so want to make sure I'm in the right place before making changes in case I get it all wrong. Cheers
timbo343 Posted April 23, 2024 Posted April 23, 2024 My experience of this is that you need to "do not filter" in HTTPS Google for the android devices to not show the "internet not available" issue - the new Captive Portal category does not work as Google is trying to get to *.google.com to validate the Android Certificate, however Do Not Filter Google then you cannot see inside the Search Terms.
