Smoothwall - NIC bonding

Morning all,

 

I'm basically rebuilding our SW from scratch this evening thanks to an overcomplicated and botched install by our previous MSP.

One thing I want to do is just set up a quick bonded interface for resilience, for now it will be going into the same switch but at Easter it'll be separate switches. The documentation from SW only mentions about the SW interfaces, so does anyone know off hand if you need to configure the switches for LACP or similar, or will it just work?

I do not know but I would think the simpler bond options, Active-backup, Round-robin and Balance Xor would just work.

Just briefly, this may be something anyone can answer.

Currently we have an internal interface which is the gateway for pretty much everything, but we also have a trunk interface with all the VLANS on (this is what I'll be bonding). That also includes the very vlan the internal is on, which seems a little counter-intuitive to me. Are both necessarily needed? Currently they both have a different IP address on the same range in that subnet.

we have lacp on our dual links to each smoothwall/core works great.

 

for your question about gateway ip on a single internal interface, either change the gateway ip for your network to the new ip on the bonded interfaces vlan or just move the ip address. (just be mindful of any firewall rules)

Just using active backup for the bond at the moment, it's now working wonderfully

Have done away with the second vlan interface and all is well in Smoothworld!
