MIS migration feedback

I'm just in the process of getting the head to agree to start a tender for moving MIS.

 

The last hurdle is getting feedback from schools on how they found their migration process went.

 

I'd be really grateful if anyone could help respond to these questions. Ideally with name of school, feel free to DM me if you don't want to share it on here.

 

My questions are as follows:

 

 

• Overall how smoothly did you find the move to your new MIS?
  
• How long did it take to complete the move to your new MIS?
  
• How did you train your staff in preparation for changing MIS?
  
• How did you spread out training for staff?
  
• Was training completed during inset/CPD days or did staff complete it in their own time?
  
• How confident were your staff in using the new MIS after the go live date?
  
• Is there anything you would do differently if you had to go through the process again?
  
• Are there any features you feel are missing in your new MIS compared to your previous one?
  
• Has moving to a cloud based MIS removed the need to provide remote access to staff?

My advice is get a list of your questions and non negotiables and get Bromcom and Arbor in front of you all and pick the best one for you from that.

Cloud based MIS mean that there is no problem with staff accessing the MIS from home in a browser.

Both Arbour and Bromcom have mobile phone apps. (We have a deputy head who find this very useful for locating pupils.)

 

I would recomend asking other local school, if they are using Bromcom, or Arbour, if they could give some selected staff a demonstration (not a saleman demonstation, but real life useage).

I can see this being really useful but would you not be worried about the devices being used to access (family shared laptops etc.) or are schools generally issuing school owned devices now?

There's gotta be trust in people that you've recruited and DBS checked etc at some point.

 

With web mail you can get your emails on any device - those emails will contain confidential information.

with one-drive or google drive you're gonna have all kinds of data remotely available.

having your mis cloud based is just more of the same.

 

There's a risk to all of the above - but there's also benefits.

 

online banking has become the norm and rightly or wrongly - i care more about unauthorised people getting hold of my money than school data - and i'm happy with the security of my online banking - security of our cloud based MIS isn't any less.

 

Have a good policy in place about not using passsword autocomplete on your home device - not sharing passwords etc and you've mitigated it to some degree - you can also enable 2FA for home use.
