OneDrive issue on New iMacs - Files On-Demand didn't start - M3 Sonoma 14.3

I am setting new iMacs for a suite and have an issue with OneDrive. Students currently save to a NAS share but moving away from that and expect students to use the OneDrive app on Macs going forward. However when trying to login to OneDrive I keep getting this error:

 

OneDrive Files On-Demand didn't start. Please restart your computer and try again. Error code: -1912600610

 

 

I have tried all the fixes via terminal commands to enable files on demand, but the error still shows on the iMac. Has anyone experienced this with new iMacs on Sonoma 14.3. Is there another way to get this working?

 

 

Ultimately the students need to be able to save work from Logic Pro app to their OneDrive, and avoid saving on local disk, so need them to be signed into the app itself.

You should not be trying to save work directly from pro applications like Logic to a network based drive be that either a NAS share or Cloud based, Logic files are saved as packages which are not compatible with either SMB or cloud shares.

What would you suggest then to save Logic Pro files? I guess if not NAS or Cloud then local but we cannot allow that on a school's network.

If you are going to using Logic Pro then students must be able to work on their projects locally not on a network drive, so you do one of the following:

 

Buy a Synology RAID for students to then compress their projects and save them to this, this can impede on lesson time though as they have to download them again at the next lesson. You might want to test using One Drive for saving work to but this will be down to your bandwidth

 

Create a seating plan so student project work is saved on the same Mac, I assume these are backed up using Time Machine or something else?

 

Allow the students to use their own external drives to save work to them (unlikely)

 

Ditch Logic and find a web browser based professional music application (good luck with that)

We will be using Jamf pro to manage the Macs, no local Time Machine backups are setup. We already have an old Music Mac suite saving to a local NAS all linked to an old Mac server, or I suppose for Logic Pro a local USB drive the Music teacher uses. I do have a Synology RAID as a spare so will try and get that configured. Its a pity that Apple's new iMacs only have 256GB local storage as standard and need to cough out an additional £300 for a 512GB internal drive. We have the 256GB. I don't think Music teacher will move away from Logic Pro.

If you have an older Mac not doing much then I would strongly suggest using it as a host for Time Machine backups, you can use either a NAS or large external to back up the content (no apps or user accounts)

The days of having a "magic triangle" are well over, mobile accounts in Mac OS X Server never ever worked properly and caused more problems than saving space on internal HDD, Jamf Pro is far and away the best tool for managing macOS.

Could you not do a local copy then sync back to the cloud ?

 

in terms of backup we have started using https://www.arqbackup.com/ to backup direct to onedrive or google drive and they do education discount if you ask.

I have looked at this article, have even tried manually downloading OneDrive app from Microsoft website directly and same problem. It doesn't happen when testing on a stand alone mac, only on a Jamf managed mac, so a clue there to do some further testing but as suggested before that OneDrive shouldn't be used for saving Logic Pro files and that's what I intended to use it for, then it will probably rule out its use.

So I found that It's the restrictions settings under configuration profiles in JamF causing the error.

 

If I unscope all restrictions to this iMac, then OneDrive works, as soon as I scope again it fails with the error. I have gone through each option within the restrictions settings and cannot figure out what is causing this. Under restrictions, I disabled -preferences so nothing is restricted in the -Restrict items in System Preferences, to no avail. I then allowed all settings under -Applications and that didn't work. - Widgets and -Media don't apply I guess. -Sharing services I allowed all options and still no difference. Under -Functionality, I allowed all options and no difference.

So at the moment only by unscoping the entire Restrictions profile under Computer configuration settings in JamF will OneDrive work, which we obviously don't want. I have raised this with JamF support, but so far after logging numerous tickets for many other issues, they either don't get back to me or don't have a fix and need to test further in their own labs.

BUT I would still not be using this with applications that explicitly say not be worked on across network, you may find your bandwidth gets eaten up if every student is trying to work from a cloud based disk.

Thanks for sharing the article, I've registered for Jamf Nation. I will stick to the Synology route for Logic pro. I'm just curious to get OneDrive working just in case other applications might be used for Students saving work in the future. Apple and Microsoft don't always see eye to eye.

The main reason why this doesn't work with the packaged installer from MS is that Jamf strictly adhere to Apple MDM Framework for in app configuration policies so this can trip you up.
