Swapping Paxton Proximity Readers for Multi Card Readers

Has anyone swapped a Paxton Proximity Card reader ( one that will only read Paxton Cards) for a Multi card reader for Mifare Classic 1K (MIFARE Classic® 1K NXP EV1) cards. IS its a simple case of buying the new reader and swapping it over or does it have to be initialized and added to the system etc.

I am trying to avoid a £250 call out charge and or a £500 per reader swap charge.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ive installed MiFare readers and Paxton systems at our place - not replaced the older card readers but i'd have thought it would be a case of replacing the reader and cable as the cable cannot be removed from reader.

 

The cable the MiFare reader uses is an 8 core cable (could be the same in the othe reader) such as alarm cable. We have extended a run to an external gate which has a reader on it using Wagos.

 

You *could* cut the cable to the reader and join the new MiFare reader, should be a case of marrying up the colours using wagos.

Honestly it's not a dark-art just marrying colours up.

 

In terms of in console, i cant remember what i choose however can see what the reader options are.

 

I know @robyholmes has done a few installs so could advise (if he is around)

Yep, just a straight swap. Definitely makes cost sense, we fit them as standard for all our customers as they then have both options.

Provided the cable to the reader is correct, or the acu is next to the door, then it should be fairly easy. I imagine if it's using the Paxton reader already, then it probably is. If the wire on the new reader is long enough, then I would tape the new to the old and pull it through. That way you don't have to worry about splicing cables together. The reader cable is fairly generous.

 

There are some settings in net2. I think they are in the normal client rather than the server manager. On the reader tab under each door the reader needs to be on Paxton rather than wiegand. Again if it's already Paxton this is probably already done

 

The other thing is registering cards, but I guess this is part of a bigger project.

 

For the wiring. Ferrule crimps are good when wiring stranded wire into screw terminals. I also like using solder seal connectors when joining cables together. They can be hid in mini trunking and give some degree of waterproofing. Wagos are also excellent if you have the space in your junction box.

Thanks for all the replies, they have been very informative. I guess I am going to be buying a multi reader and doing a straight swap on one door to prove the concept and then take it from there.
