1:1 Pupil Laptops

Morning All,

 

We're having major issues with laptop vandalism here in school. A bit wimpy I know, but I've been upset today by the damage I have seen caused in one department. Key ripped off keyboards, screens smashes and trackpads lifted. Clearly done on purpose. Staff had not mentioned it, so when I did my trolley walk around I discovered them and was lost for words.

 

So - I am now looking at how we can stop this.

 

One idea was to force kids into 1:1 laptop provision. I know there are schools that do this, so want to get in touch with the people who run the schemes. Who do you use? Pitfalls? etc etc

That's one reason I suggested it. You break your laptop, now you have a broken laptop, give us money or use this piece of paper/laptop that's older than you are.

 

Main problem is teachers aren't enforcing that rule, or people breaking other people's laptops because they left them lying around.

We have similar issues and run a 1:1 scheme.

 

If you've got students who are not looking after the devices then they will do the same with the 1:1 devices as well.

 

It really needs pastoral support to get to the bottom of the issues. Otherwise you can end up with students constantly without and then you still have to keep spares around for them to use in lessons - otherwise you can be seen as discriminating against them.

 

1:1 does have other benefits in terms of incorporating IT into more lessons, but you need to have a plan to deal with damages. It does give you a better idea of who is doing the damage, as you will constantly have to deal with there devices and those of the students who they sit next to. Its probably a relatively small number of students causing issues.

Sorry to say it all comes down to classroom management and strong SLT support (consequences) - if you don't have one, or have neither than it doesn't matter what devices you buy they'll still get smashed up just the same.

 

I do think you get less vandalism with 1:1 devices as the pupils generally understand that if they rip the keys off their own keyboard they will be the one that can't type properly - but at the same time you so get more accidental damage (bags dropped etc) so it's courses for courses.

 

Expect 10% fleet damage within 3-5 years as a norm (anyone else suffering any less than that please tell me how, you wizards!!!!)
