Importing PST into Exchange 2007

Hi All,

 

I currently have a live Exchange 2003 server. I have just built a new Exchange 2007 server on a new domain and forest. I have got all the mailboxes/users created and setup.

 

The next step is to export the PST files from old server to new. I have used exmerge to create the pst file, but then copied it across to the new exchange server 2007, and it says cant do this as your running a 64 bit O/S.

 

Now, I understand you need to install exchange management tools 2007 on a 32 bit O/S with Outlook 2003. This creates the PST file but then how do i import this PST file into the new exchange 2007, which is on a new domain. I would be in the same situation.

 

Any advice would be appreciated

Have a look at this:

So long as the management tools are connected to your 2k7 server then the management tools will upload the mailboxes to that server when you tell it to do so.

I'm not sure that I understand which point you are up to with this. You should use the 2003 version of exmerge to export the PSTs from the old server and then put this in a location accessible to your exchange 2007 management equipped pc. You should be logged on to the managment pc with an account that has Exchange Organization Admin or an Exchange Server Admin privilages on the new server.

 

You now run the exchange 2007 SP1 managment tools and point them at the directory with all of your PSTs in it.

In Exchange 2007 can you not move all the mailboxes to another server using a wizard like in 2003?

I am working on the 32Bit server running server 2003 which contains the old Exchange 2003 mailboxes. I have used ExMerge to export a PST from one mail box.

 

I then copied that PST file to a Server 2003 server which has installed version of Exchange 2007 management tools and Outlook 2007 on it. This server is on the same domain as my new Exchange 2007 server. So I put the PST on the local disk drive (c:/). I then used the Import-Mailbox command but when i press enter it fails as it cannot find that command on the Server 2003. I am unable to perform this command on the new Exchange server 2007 as it fails due to it being a 64bit O/S.

 

I am confused as to what to do to get these mailboxes migrated from my Exchange 2003 one domain to a Exchange 2007 which is on a different domain.

Do you have exchange 2007 installed on a 32bit server?

As a sidenote you *really* shouldn't have exchange/admin tools and Outlook on the same box as it can break the exchange mapi files.

You should really be using a client machine on the new domain to do this as it requires outlook to be installed in order to give the tools access to the appropriate MAPI files.

 

You should have both the exchange 2007 managment tools and outlook on the client machine.

 

You also need to run these commands from inside windows powershell not the basic command prompt as these tools are integrated into Powershell.

Hmm, well I guess you might need to for this then, but there are various KBs saying not to do it in general!

Ah, I didnt know that as I'm still on 2003 as I can't have 64 bit VMs

Hmm, well I guess you might need to for this then, but there are various KBs saying not to do it in general!

 

This was a definite issue with Exchange 2003 based systems but I think that the problem has been reduced somewhat with 2007 as the MAPI stuff is not installed by default so you would be able to install outlook without hassles from that bit (you can't anyway as outlook requires 32bit). It does mean that if you want to use Blackberry Enterprise Server or some other legacy applications you need to install the components separately though.

Do i need to get a laptop with XP on it and then add it to the new domain so it can see the new exchange server 2007?

Get a client machine with windows xp or vista, join it to the new domain. Install outlook and the exchange 2007 sp1 management tools on the client.

 

Log on to the client with an account with full exchange privileges, probably the main administrator account.

 

Open up Exchange Management Shell (EMS) (I had it wrong when i said powershell earlier) on this client and run those commands pointing it towards where ever the pst files are stored.

I have just got a brand new laptop connected it to the new domain. I installed Outlook 2007 on it and then installed Exchange Server 2007 Management tools. I then opened both the Exchange shell and the power shell to try to import a PST into a mailbox.

 

But i still get the same error message in red writing

Its probably a permissions problem you need to add the user that you are running the import command under to all Exchange Admin Groups

Can I please take this opportunity to thank you all for supporting me in getting my Exchange 2007 working. I have just this one more small issue I have got this external dns mail.xxxx.org which I use for all our external e-mails. It forwards all external e-mail.

 

I have set up a connector through the hub transport but the e-mails are getting stuck saying unreacheable.

Howdy folks, i'm having a bit of a problem trying to import a PST file into our new Exchange 2007 server.

The users we are moving to exchange have been using a basic email hosting service provided by Fasthosts (arrgh i know), they have been downloading there emails to outlook 2003 clients, i exported there existing personnel folder to a PST file and i used the management shell to import it.

everything seems to go fine but when i check the users new exchange inbox nothing is there.

I also checked the size of the mailbox database and it doesn't seem to have taken any data as its still at 8KB. the file i was trying to imprt was 120mb and i tried to import the inbox only which is just over 4mb.
