one.com and other problems

Hi there

 

I was wondering, who do people suggest for hosting a joomla site? I have gone with one.com and they are awful.

I cannot install a php calendar,

i cannot change my configuration.php file through joomla (i have to edit and then upload it)

i cant set file permissions with a CHMOD.php file,

i cant install extensions or modules either!

 

any suggestions of a cheap provider? the local LEA charge £100 a year to convert the free hosting option to one with MySQL and thats with very limited space, maybe 50/100mb

 

any ideas?!?

 

is there anyone with one.com that can help me out?

I've been able to set up a Joomla testing site with 000webhost.com for free!

noob questions now...

 

should i go for windows or linux? which of their options should i go for? what are the absolute must-haves for a joomla site?

 

I wish to install a calendar too, use ftp (possibly the ftp layer in joomla if i can!)

 

my-sql ms-sql whats the difference? do i need one or the other or both?

 

Windows & Linux Web Hosting :: CS New Media Web Hosting they have bronze silver etc...size isnt a huge issue as we will mainly be hosting documents etc, but its all the other stuff!

 

any advice would be great!!! i dont want to sign u to the wrong package, like i did with one.com!

Linux server would be best, and it was also suggested by carl over at cs-new media. In terms of performace, linux the way forward. I am going for the diamond package (not sure what other people went for on here).

 

mysql comes with the linux server package and will do you just fine. the other one is microsoft version of mysql.

 

I too want to install the calender module, I think Its been brought up once before here on the joomla 1.0 projects forum. Will be taking a look on monday when I'm back at work.
