Zigbee switch to wireless bulb

I think I can do this, but want to confirm before I buy anything. We bought a house which used to be a bungalow and was then extended up. As a result, the lights on our landing are activated by a motion sensor and come on when movement is detected. This motion sensor is positioned at one end of the landing and sometimes comes on with a slight delay. I want to replace it with a switch, but have one at the top of the stairs and one at the bottom. I don't want to run any cabling so I thought I could get some wireless switches could be used instead.

 

So I looked at some Aqara switches but they only run on Zigbee and I also found some cheap wireless bulbs which should work with google home. I have google nest mini so I was thinking if I get an Aqara hub I can then connect the Aqara switch to Google and then use it to turn the bulb on/off.

 

So my question is this. Can I use the aqara zigbee switch connect to google home via Zigbee hub and control the bulb with google home?

I think you can yes.

 

If you want to skip out all the smart home stuff, it’s worth looking at Quinetic switches. They are wireless switches that link directly back to main switch. The best thing is they don’t need batteries. They are powered by kinetic energy.

The problem I have is there is no main switch. The motion sensor if in the ceiling so I would need to replace that with a switch. This is why I was thinking of a battery switch as I can then place it anywhere, including a second one downstairs. Upstairs and downstairs have separate fuse box. As I wanted to test it, I am thinking I can buy 1 smart bulb and the aqara zigbee hub and switch and then make sure it works before buying more bulbs. The only thing I am not so sure of is if any vendor bulbs require internet access for operation. Or is this just for original config and rest can be controlled via google home. I'm looking to get something this week as maybe part of black Friday but I need something as walking to the stairs with my phone as a torch is getting to be a pain.

You would connect the main switch (not sure of the actual name) in parallel or replace the motion sensor. You don't have to be physically touching it and it can be hidden away.

It would work exactly like that, place them anywhere. You don't nee a battery and you don't need to hard wire them in.

 

It is worth watching this video to understand them, they are designed for the situation you face.

The issue you will have with your current setup, you will need to modify that sensor as it will cut power to your smart bulbs and they won't work.

@FN-GM - this is what I am trying to do yeah. I need to watch the full video when I get time. As for the current sensor. Yeah I know I'll need to mess with that, but I am not too worried about that. Just how it will look. For now, I want something cheap that will work, but won't tie me down into 1 vendor. If I do decide to continue with creating a smart home, I don't want to be spending too much on tech which will become a pain to manage. Currently I am still justifying going "smart" just to turn lights on/off. But in the meantime I am buying new bulbs which I could be putting into smart ones if I knew what I wanted.

 

Plus REALLY want to stop having to grab my phone to light the way to the stairs before the lights come on!!

I totally get it. I have a few smart home things and don’t want to be tied into 1 vendor, don’t want to be dependent on the cloud and keep it simple. Hard to keep all that in check. That is generally why i avoid smart stuff if I can.

I'd recommend Quinetic too. If there's not an existing switch, you can put a receiver on the supply at the light fitting and then put as many switches as you like wherever you want!

as others have said , look at the quinetic recievers and switches they will do exactly what you need it to do wit hthe advantage that you can link somthing like 30 switches to one reciever and they just work

 

ive two in my house one running as a two wat switch and the other a single switch controlling two different devices .

 

not the cheapest of brands but in this case you definatly get what you pay for
