old chromebook options

Got some very old chromebooks that don't get updates anymore.

 

Will probably end up getting recycled, just looking in admin console looks like

I need to deprovision them first (no option to remove)?

 

Also thought about trying chromeos flex or even linux, guess I'd also

need to deprovision first in this case.

 

Actually if chromeos flex works would the "Google Chrome Education Upgrade Licence" transfer

i.e. so I could manage them in the admin console ?

When you click deprovision there is an option

but that doesn't sound like what I want to do

looks like only way to install chromeos flex on an old chromebook is to replace bootloader,

e.g. tried this https://mrchromebox.tech/#fwscript

was going well until I found out "ARM devices are not supported"

 

would be interested to know if anyone has done this on EOL intel chromebook and found out if the

Education Upgrade Licence transfers over (as it is same hardware/device) ?

 

Also put chromeos flex on an old windows laptop just to try it. Couldn't enroll

as no Education Upgrade Licences but signed in with a pupil account and got the

wifi, extensions, etc so still usable.

 

What are the main benefits of buying the Education Upgrade Licence and enrolling ?

I read an article yesterday that Google are probably bringing out a different system to Flex, for extending the life of Chromebooks. It didn't say when it might come out.

Ah - I think I got to about the same point trying to get our old Asus C100PA devices reformatted.

 

Also put chromeos flex on an old windows laptop just to try it.

 

That's where we've found it works best - I've just handed out some reformatted-with-ChromeOS 10-year-old laptops for staff to take home if they want a spare device, they work surprisingly well.

 

What are the main benefits of buying the Education Upgrade Licence and enrolling ?

 

You get a managed device. With Google Workspace, it's great how settings, permissions and even app installations follow the user around - as long as a child is logged in with their school account (even on a non-school-owned / managed device) you can ensure they have their school filtering and permissions. The easy way for them to get around that on a non-managed device is, of course, to log out of their school account and log in with their own. You can stop that on a manged device by simply only allowing your school domain logins on that device.

This doesnt help any of us with very old chromebooks but they are extending chromebook update lifespan from 5 years to 10 years for any chromebooks made after 2021.

 

It's unclear if this will retro apply to older chroembooks the article seems to suggest it "may".

 

I said this all along to them but sadly it's taken them 8 years to catch up with me :-/
