fiza Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I am looking to replace an old HP A5120-48G EI switch and was looking at the Aruba Instant On JL686A 1930 switch. It comes with 48 ports and POE+ and 10G SFP+ ports for less than £800. It will be an edge switch carrying voice and data so is there anything wrong with buying a 1930? It seems so much cheaper than a standard Aruba switch with 10G SFP+ ports no PoE!!
timbo343 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Ive got some. They are good but run a little warm. 1
Jcx500 Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 Yeah they are good value for money. If you like using switches via cli these don’t have that functionality. You either have local gui mgmt or cloud mgmt 1
computer_expert Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I've got an 8 port 1930 and I really miss the CLI. I find the local UI cumbersome especially when using VLANs (not sure what the cloud portal is like for switches as you lose a large number of features when linked to the cloud).
Aprice Posted September 8, 2023 Posted September 8, 2023 I think they're a good value 'low' end switch, I'd probably prefer one in most cases to something like a TP Link. That said I massively prefer a CLI, I just find it so much faster to SSH or console in and get all the info I need from a couple of quick commands, hitting the tab key a few times along the way. Did find the whole Cloud / local a bit messy, would have much rather been able to use both if the cloud limitations have to be accepted. It has been a while now since I've used one so stuff may have changed. 1
synaesthesia Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 Decent quality and performance; absolutely diabolical UI! The VLAN configuration is enough to make you give up IT, relocate to nepal and live as a goat. 1
ssouth Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 Very good for the price, no complaints from me other than they run a bit hot - not sure why they haven't put a couple of decent fans in it. Strangely enough I really like the UI and find setting up VLANS, general config etc really simple - and I'm no switch wizard.

With some luck, they've updated and fixed them It still seems odd that they'd deviate away from the UI's used on other devices; simply enough to do even with differing operating systems, but when nomenclatures differ it gets confusing. From what I remember, it was the PVID and native vlan settings which were really odd!
ssouth Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 We've recently bought some 1930, 1960 and 6100 models and the UI is different on all of them.
whartomt01 Posted September 12, 2023 Posted September 12, 2023 Anyone seen Instant on with 2.5Gbe ports. Find it strange they offer 2.5gbe AP but not the switch to run them
