Office 365 - delay in sending messages

Is it possible to put a global delay on sending emails to external accounts for certain users in an AD group?

 

Not been asked yet, but is will be coming and I want to get a head of it before I start getting mithered by SLT!

When we looked, the simple answer was "no".

 

There is a great youTube video from one of the Office 365 content creators going through "recalling e-mail" and how to setup delivery delay (has to be user side, you can't do it centrally)

The Outlook desktop app now has this feature. Options > Delay delivery.

That option has been in Outlook application for a while, but requires the application to generally be running at the time for the message to be sent as it just sits in the outbox.

 

If you close Outlook the message will not send until it's reopened so like the other delay send, it's of limited value and requires users to manually make the change as it's not something that we can push out centrally (especially when these days we want users to go to the web version as it saves downloading months of e-mails all the time)

If you wanted to home-brew something like it.:

 

Have a rule-based connected that ships all email to a on-prem SMTP server for a selected group of users.

 

Have a second on-prem SMTP server that ships email to O365 (and is allowlisted to do so etc). Manipulate the stop and start of SMTP services so mail is collected in on the incoming SMTP, queued there, then sent back to O365 when the SMTP service starts.

 

This is a daft solution, dont do it.

 

​You can setup email moderation which is perhaps more appropriate but would require a human unless you get clever.
