JCQ (Exams) regulations - Session video recording

Hi,

 

Has anyone had any experience with this years exam reg's specifically regarding the recording of sessions where a BSL interpreter is required? Our exams team are under the belief that the entire session needs to be video recorded with both the candidate and the BSL interpreter in frame. I had a session today that was almost 3:45hrs long, you can imagine the size of the video file!

 

Looking at the JCQ regulations myself, I can only see the following section which 'may' be relevant.

5.13 - *There is not a requirement to process an application using Access arrangements

online or to record the use of the arrangement. No evidence is needed to support

the arrangement.

 

5.13.3 A Communication Professional will work ‘live’ in the presence of the candidate

during the examination in order to allow for the candidate’s regional variations in

BSL/ISL signs. Consequently, this cannot be checked by the awarding body for

accuracy. Great care must be taken not to disadvantage or advantage the

candidate. Centres should video the signing of the Communication Professional to

demonstrate accuracy

 

5.13 suggests that we dont need to record the actual use of a sign language interpreter.

5.13.3 suggests that we need only to video the demonstration of accuracy (IMO a short video showing the interpreter is capable, not the entire session)

 

Can anyone else, with experience in this area either validate my reading of this or tell me otherwise?

 

I have multiple simultaneous sessions running on Wednesday, whilst I can make this work, its a hell of a lot of work if we dont really have to do it!

Surely the length of the session and therefore filesize is not going to change if both the student and BSL interpreter are in the frame, compared to just the student? The session will take just as long? I fail to see how a different camera shot affects the amount of work you need to do to submit the exam work?

I read it differently. It's not that videoing an extra person makes a bigger file or more work, it's the question of whether a sample would be enough, which would be much shorter and therefore smaller than a video of the full exam. Similarly, it's easier to video several sorry extracts rather than several complete exams.

Yep, that's the one. Just a 1 minute recording of the interpreter signing an agreed piece of text. IMO that demonstrates accuracy.
