VLC to CSP or VLC to CSP \ VLC

Hi all,

 

Have a few primary schools on the Office 365 A1 for faculty which is free. They also have Volume Licensing in place. They have on premise servers.

 

I'm not totally familiar with the CSP Licensing model other than it's obviously for products being used in the Cloud, so I'm trying to ascertain if these schools should be moving to CSP or both CSP and Volume Licensing and whether it is cheaper or more productive.

 

The schools have Microsoft Office Professional installed locally on all their client systems. My concern is that if they went with the CSP option then this version of Microsoft Office would have to be uninstalled from all client systems. In addition, in order to use the M365 Office applications on each system each user i.e. staff and pupil would have to sign M365 after logging onto the clients and also the Shared Computer Activation would have to be setup.

 

Maybe it's not as complicated as the above but if it is, it would be very time-consuming it seems considering the current client setup.

 

Also, what other 'obstacles' with licensing on premise client systems i.e. Windows and Office would there be by using CSP if any?

 

Just wondered if there is anyone out there that has either moved from VLC to CSP completely or from VLC to CSP \ VLC and encountered issues or found it very beneficial and cost effect ?

We were going to do the same, however, we have a number of devices which were originally purchased with the home edition of 7 etc. In order to activate you need the pro edition of 7 at lowest

 

Also, the student use entitlement doesn't include CALS and so you'd have to purchase additional for students

You're not able to move totally to CSP yet - you can get Microsoft 365 A3 on CSP which includes Office, Windows, Intune, Azure AD P1 and a number of other licences that might be useful depending on what you need.

 

You'll still need a qualifying product for your OVS-ES which can be the Core Cal Suite or there is a one-off licence that costs around £25 - you would then need to licence your cals, servers, RDS, SQL etc under that OVS agreement.

The main caveat for us was the fact that hardware licensing will need either a BIOS windows 10 key or a visit to each machine and individually licenses and activated. It will no longer be a "paperwork keeping exercise to make sure each machine has a license", each machine will need to physically be licensed. We have a lot of W8 era machines that do not fit the bill, also we have a lot of W10 refurb licensed machines that did not have the BIOS key as they were not factory W10 licensed.

 

In the end it was not a huge price difference to add Azure P1 to the "usual" desktop pack + free 365 desktop apps uplift as opposed to M365

 

The OS needs to be able to AD/AAD domain join so you need "pro" except W10, you can "free" upgrade W10home to W10pro for education https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/partner-center/upgrade-windows-to-education

I've been told that EES (Not CSP) you still get a KMS key, so your non digital license devices can still activate.

I was told the exact opposite by my three providers - VeryPC looked into loads of hybrid ways to get around this by having a hybrid CSP solution, you lose the entire MVLS normally so no keys to download at all, you wont use MVLS for M365 admin, it will all be via the 365 logons.

 

EDIT: I see you said EES, we arent big enough for EES, that was still 1000 licenses when we were renewing, we are less than 100

We moved a primary school to CSP license last summer - admittedly they did want to go fully cloud so this worked out better for them.

 

That being said we did come across the issue with devices that only had the home version of Windows licensed. I’m not sure if this applies to any Windows 7 era devices but if you have any running 10 Home you can upgrade it to Education for via CSP as part of the license pack. I guess you could get the free upgrade on the older devices to 10 home and then go from there??
