SCCM - Server In-Place Upgrades

For a while, I've been using SCCM to in-place upgrade Windows 10 on desktops and it's always worked well. I've never used SCCM to in-place upgrade the servers though, they were previously done via mounting the ISO and upgrading that way (which I did for the upgrades from 2012 > 2016 and 2016 > 2019). I suspect that an in-place upgrade via SCCM would work fine, since they all have the SCCM client installed...I'm just wondering about the SCCM server itself. Is it possible to in-place upgrade the server itself? I just don't know what would happen when it comes to initialising the client, which I undertsand usually involves communicating with the SCCM server...but it can't if it's not yet online.
