SYNACK Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 You shouldn't have to much of a problem with this software connectivity wise as it uses all outgoing ports and does not require mapping any inbound ports. This should make it a lot easier to get CLEO to open up the necessary lines of communication as it is less of a security risk than mapping inbound ports.

browolf Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 what's happened: got the port opened. That bit works great! SMTs decided not to pay vodafone £900 odd quid to set it up, so I've done it myself, but it doesnt work properly and they wont give us any support (unsurprisingly). The whole enterprise software seems like a complete bodge. It's got mad preinstall requirements. I've obviously gone wrong somewhere along the line but I havent got time to spend weeks on it, and they want it before the end of term (Its a trial) so they're gonna have to pony up for V to come and do it. The software is free to use for up to 10 users I think. but you need to be on a blackberry mobile service.
uk101man Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 (edited) Hi, What's not working correctly, maybe I can help. I've done a lot of BES installs. A few points to remember... You need to make sure the VF contract has a Blackberry Enterprise Service (BES) addon and not Blackberry Internet Service (BIS). I would ask VF to resend the service books. If you device is/was on BIS and now its on BES, I recommend you wipe the device and then create a new user in the BES admin console. Regards Tom Edited July 11, 2008 by uk101man
browolf Posted July 11, 2008 Author Posted July 11, 2008 there's something up with the BB server agent 1 (will not restart errors) MAPI doesnt work I added a few users to bes but they were stuck on initializing. so i deleted them and now they're stuck in some purge limbo re:mapi i'm not quite sure how upto date exchange 2003 is, what SPs its got on. I had the server manager on, cant remember if I added SPs or not now. but mapi didnt work.
SYNACK Posted July 11, 2008 Posted July 11, 2008 MAPI should only be a problem with Exchange 2007 as 2003 has all of those components installed by default. The biggest things are the permissions in AD and exchange, they all have to be manually set through the AD console and give stupid errors when they are slightly wrong. Another thing to note is that Domain Admins cannot have BES accounts as it opens up security holes. If it is stuck in initializing it sounds like a communications error between BES and the devices. How did you join them to the BES server? Using the desktop cable and software or wireless? I found cable much more relyable. You are right about BES/BPS being a horrible beast to install, it seems to have almost no automation during the install and requires you to do half an hour worth of stuff beforehand to get it going. I also have no idea why they decided it would be a good idea to do the whole thing in rubbish slow java.

I don't think that it is MS who should take the blame for this one, my Windows mobile devices handle emails fine even with my domain admin rights, likewise if I access it through pop3, imap or webmail. It is Blackberries rubbish implementation layer that sits between exchange and your device that is the problem.
browolf Posted July 17, 2008 Author Posted July 17, 2008 omg GOT IT WORKING!!!! reinstalled the blackberry server whilst logged on with the bes account then figured out I needed to phone Vodaphone to activate the blackberry service on the sim card we'd got out of a different contract phone (they didnt send us a sim card) it's well quick. a msg sent to me gets to blackberry as fast as it shows up in my outlook!

browolf Posted July 18, 2008 Author Posted July 18, 2008 i've got a question, im searching for an answer for.... I dont have the BB to hand as the deputy has taken it to try out. she wants to be able to see the head's shared calender on it as well as her own. is that possible?
