Air Conditioning

Does anyone use the cheapish portable units in their ICT suites. We have a wall mounted jobby in one suite which is excellent but one of the other suites gets unbearably hot but I don't think we can justify an expensive solution as the room function is probably going to change in the next 12 months.

 

I realise that, on spec., we would probably need four or five units to adequately cool a room full of computer but I'm wondering if one or two portable units might help.

Bear in mind that portable units have exhaust vents to take away warm air and water collectors that need changing, probably daily. Plonking a portable unit in the middle of a room won't help, the exhaust vent will warm up the half of the room in goes through. Best if you can place the unit against the wall, with a dedicated vent hole (just an open window won't really do it as that'll let all the cold air out...). At that point, you might as well get a properly fitted unit!

We had a couple of portables in the server rooms in my last school.

They did the job nicely.

1 room 25' x 10', 7 servers, 3 PC's, 7' rack full with switches, 1 air con unit, nice and chilly.

How do you vent it Steve?

Sorry I haven't replied to this one earlier.

 

We had a hole cut in the wall, I think it was about a 4" pipe, so standard core bit size for extrator fans.

We also put a hose on instead of the drip tray so we didn't keep emptying it.

 

The kids used to love it in the winter, they all used to stand around the vent while having a crafty fag.
