Google Shared Drive Subfolders Permissions?

Apologies if this has been asked in the past.

 

What is the best way to assign subfolder permissions in Google Share folders because for a while now we have been bounded by Google when it comes to changing a subfolder it changes the permissions on the shared folder too.

 

For example:

 

>SHARED DRIVE

>> SubfolderA - This is shared with USER1 with CONTRIBUTOR role

>>>SubSubFolder1 - This needs to be shared with USER1 with VIEWER role because we don't want USER1 to be able to edit anything in this folder however changing the permission will affect the folder above.

>>>SubSubFolder2 - This needs to be set so USER1 is REMOVED from accessing this folder but setting USER1 to remove, will also remove their access to SubFolderA.

>> SubfolderB

>> SubfolderC

 

When we try changing the permissions, we get a warning to say - "Changing permissions on this folder will also change permissions on its parent folders."

 

Yet what we have found is, it is possible to assign SubfolderA with VIEWER role and SubSubFolder1 as CONTRIBUTOR role.

 

It seems like it is possible to go forwards or up the permission level between SubFolders and SubSubFolders but not backwards or down the permission levels.

 

How are other Google Workspace users getting around this issue.

Haven't tried to do anything quite so granular within a shared drive, but one way to achieve it would be to have your SubSubFolder1 and SubSubFolder2 up at the root level, so that you can set up whatever privileges are needed on them, and then place shortucts to them in SubFolderA as required. It means that users can navigate to them via SubFolderA, but the folders themselves are not inheriting any privileges from it.
