Backups

OK, this is just a query regarding who they should be done by. Our backups are performed on our server obvisouly backing up user areas etc. Now I have been told that access to user areas and server based tasks are not my responsibility, but part of my current job is performing backups.

 

I have informed the head that without authorisation to the server I cannot update the backups, check that they are completing and restore any files. The reason I have given is that I would need to logon to the server as an Network Admin account which would give me complete access to anything on the network.

 

However, I have been told by another member of staff that I could log on and just access the backup area of the server. My query is which one of us is right? I dont want to touch the backups as even at a basic level, I shouldn't be accessing user areas other than my own.

 

Any advice apreciated.

In order to backup something, you need access rights I'd say.

 

We have LEA backups right now, but all tech level users have child user area access...not staff areas though. Child area access is invaluable for games control, work recovery, printing and so on.

With our software you do not need to login as a domain admin to carry our backups and restore data. What program are you using? Obviously to check that files are fully restored it would be helpful if you could browse the users area but if you can't do that then you could just ask the user to check.

There is a Backup Operators group that you could be added to which would give you rights to:

Backup Operators can override security restrictions for the sole purpose of backing up or restoring files

 

You would need to be given added into the domain controller security policy to be able to log into the server without an admin account but it is fully doable.

some backup software can be controlled by a web interface you could use any pc to browse to the backup software and check everything is ok.
