Laptop docking station question

Just ordered a Dell Vostro 5410, which comes with a USB Type C slot.

 

Does that mean it will work with one of the newer Type C docking stations?

 

Would I be better to get a 'normal' USB docking station?

If it's an Intel Core i5 or i7, the USB slot supports power delivery according to Dell's spec page for that model of laptop.

 

I'd go with a USB-C dock if it is i5 or i7, personally. This way it will charge and connect to to the dock through just one cable.

 

Just this morning I setup a Dell WD19 which worked perfectly out the box.

just a word of warning, AV doesn't always work across some combination of devices and docks. For example, we have HP usb-c docks everywhere, and seem to work nicely with HP and Dell windows laptops, and also Dell, Lenovo, and HP chromebooks. All using just 1 cable for power, AV, USBs, and network. However we've discovered that asus chromebooks (various models) don't pass the sound through over the dock HDMI like the other branded devices.

There are models of laptop that do not do video over USB C at all. Note that the USB C dock is normally just passing the video through, they are rarely actually a USB graphics card. So, you need to check the USB C specs for the laptops in question to make sure this is supported.
