Printer driver via group policy

Hi all,

 

Have a client with a 2019 Server.

 

Printers are pushed out via group policy via Group Policy Preferences. However, although all clients (Windows 10 64bit) pick up the printer from the GPO they do not pick up the correct driver. The driver on the server is the latest driver for that printer but the clients just receive a basic driver even though they pick up the printer fine. We have setup printers like this for years without issue.

 

I know there has been some issues with printing because of some cumulative updates this year, just wondered if anyone had experienced the same.

What i've discovered is that apparently, if the drivers on the server are V4, then the basic Point and Print driver will be used by the workstation. Replacing the server drivers with V3 drivers SHOULD resolve that !!!

Correct. Never use the v4 drivers. They're built into Windows and have very basic functionality. You should always get the v3 driver from the manufacturer.

Also be aware you don’t want to reverse changes to lessen security. Only administrators can now install print drivers if all defaults are kept.
