There was a line connected to the alarm system but you had to go into a cupboard and unplug the alarm and swap it for a phone.

Hehe, we have a SOHO phone system in at home (for church) and there is a splitter that feeds a spare socket bypassing the PBX in case of need.

 

It is however behind a piece of furniture board that requires 6 screws to remove, as it didn't pass the WAF (actually MAF) being on display.

We recently moved from VM Business back to residential for home. They preferred us to use the Telephone jack on the back of their (not so super) SuperHub rather than the phone jack that was traditionally installed 20-odd years ago. Only reason we keep the phone line is our alarm is remotely monitored and has to be physically cabled in to a telephone line. Next to nobody else I know still has a live BT phone line (or similar) in their house these days.

Although if it is an emergency and you use the emergency call feature, or even dial the emergency numbers, it will go over any mobile phone network available.
