Gongalong Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Hi folks, I think the answer to this is "no", but is it possible to use the OneDrive app, and have all files only available online? I've read around the topic, and it's confused by storage sense, and what you have set specific files/folders too, but as I understand it OneDrive will always download a file when you access it. The reasons I don't want them locally are (1) to eliminate any space the OneDrive app uses and (2) to avoid any data being on an unencrypted drive. Expecting a "no", but... Thanks
robyholmes Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 No, files on demand is the middle ground. Although you can open files in Office from OneDrive and SharePoint without syncing them via OneDrive client. I do hope Microsoft might integrate that in to file explorer so all programs could use it. Even if that means storing that one file locally while it's open as a temp file. 1
Gongalong Posted July 10, 2021 Author Posted July 10, 2021 So when you use the desktop app it's opening direct from the cloud? Although I guess there are still temporary files likely to be stored locally.
robyholmes Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 Files on demand is syncing files which remain on the device until space is needed back. However Office manages to open cloud files without having them synced in OneDrive first. It'll be storing them as temp files I'm sure, but why couldn't File Explorer do this? Meaning any program can open cloud files. 1
Gongalong Posted July 10, 2021 Author Posted July 10, 2021 Certainly with fast internet connections, why not have an online only mode? Oh well. Thanks for confirming!
chaplic Posted July 10, 2021 Posted July 10, 2021 You can configure conditional access so that from untrusted devices/ IPs you cannot download files, thus forcing web equivalents of word, excel etc. 1
