Acoustic wall cabinet?

Anyone used an Acoustic wall mounted data cabinet?

 

If so, how well did it work.

 

With PoE switches becoming more noisy some areas we need to place them are in classroom or office and so the noise needs to be heavily reduced

Anyone used an Acoustic wall mounted data cabinet? If so, how well did it work.

 

Yes, we have one installed in our ICT suite - heafty PoE-capable switch, makes a fair bit of noise, but in a teaching classroom. It's basically a standard cabinet with foam stuffed around the outside. Works better than I might have expected - the noise from the switches in other parts of the school is quite noticeable, but very much less so in the ICT room. There doesn't seem to have been any issues with the switch overheating or anything, either, and we've had it in there for at least 6 years now. I rather wish we'd had them put in more places, there's a couple of places in corridors where the noise from our switches is a bit too loud.

We have a couple around school. I reckon they may knock the noise down to about 20% so not unnoticeable but definately way better. Also no problem with heat.

 

One thing to consider as they aren't cheap, is how much it cost to run the ports back to another can and cut that cabinet out completely?

Surely it would be cheaper to replace the fans in the switches with some super quiet noctua ones?

Cheaper, maybe, but if the switch dies it won’t get replaced under warranty because it’s been opened and had non standard parts fitted. Plus there’d be the whole argument of whether it was the non standard fans that caused the failure and so on.

 

On a switch that could be worth £1500 or more, it’s not worth the aggro IMO.

The switches I will need to install may be £3k+ so won’t be putting any silent fans in to void the warranty
