Office365 Emails data retention period?

Hi I am struggling with this a bit - I have found the section in exchange admin where default retention periods are listed "Default MRM Policy" which contains various options between 1 week and never delete. However, I can't seem to see a way to check which of those is actually being applied to my user's inboxes?

 

There is a default 2-year policy but this can't be being applied as we have stuff in inboxes older than 2 years that has not disappeared.

 

Anyone any ideas? If I go into a mailbox and right-click on inbox the only option is "parent folder policy" which doesnt tell me what the policy actually is? I can right-click on an individual email though and parent policy is still selected, and then I have the options to change to from 1 week to never.
