Our IT manager is currently absent and we are having an issue with our Sims SQL instance not backing up. We use Backup Exec 2012 and recently the MIS Server was upgraded to SQL 2016. Backup Exec reports that it is 'Unable to Attach to a Resource', which is our SQL 2016 instance. Does anybody know if the Backup Exec 2012 SQL Agent is compatible with SQL 2016?

I fear that it isn't and we'll have to put a new backup system in place.

Few things you can do short term until they return of you can't fix the agent.

1) Install and use SQL manager and manually backup the SIMS database to a backup location (export database to a bak file).

2) Ensure you have a copy of the SIMS simsdata share (your S drive or whatever sims is mapped to)

3) Ensure you have a copy of the SIMS Docstorage share. (Important, this is where all the SIMS documents live in encrypted format)

Should disaster hit, capita can do a full recovery from the above

You could also use dbbackup and a scheduled task to backup the database to file:

Path will need updating but the principal will be the same - if you use the transfer login part first it will store the passwords in the backup also.
