Growing .AVHDX file

I have a production VM file server that has a growing .AVHDX file. This file is eating 100gig a day. In hyper v manager there are no check points for this vm.

 

Can I turn this off?? Is there a setting, if so where?

 

All other VM servers are not using .AVHDX files.

 

Any ideas

It's not a dynamically expanding AVHDX with dedup enabled in the vm is it?

AVHDXs are differencing disks based on snapshots as you mentioned, but sometimes a backup software when running won't always close one correctly and can leave it in the state you mentioned.

 

Often just shutting down the VM will kick HyperV into merging them back together, but obviously may take a while depending how big the disk is.

Thanks, yes I think this is the approach I’m going to have to take. It 2T to merge. I turned off the server and it started merging. It did about 5% an hour. Being a file server I can’t leave it off to complete during the week, So it’s turned back on atm and will have to shut it down over the weekend.
