Ranger - Internet Explorer Security Settings

Seem to be having a spot of bother with Ranger 5.9. A week ago, everything went haywire when .man files went missing on their own accord and now with the student mandatory profile reset, Ranger decides it wants to have a go.

 

Problem as follows.

 

GPO settings for IE6/7 null

Ranger settings for IE6/7 null (Clean Ranger testing group)

Man Profile for IE6/7 null (Clean and clear, even reset defaults, runonce as well as allow downloading of files).

 

When a user browses say AQA to download previous papers etc in PDF for other format, IE blurts out "Your security settings do not allow this file to be downloaded" However even than reseting internet explorer settings doesn't allow the file to be downloaded.

 

However........ It all works with the removal of Ranger (however no policies are applied) Anyone got any suggestions as too the underlying cause?

This will probably be the most in-constructive advice I've ever given, but I have to say it . . . .

 

Ditch ranger, we did and we've never looked back. We had all sorts of problems on our system, but as soon as we got ranger off the network, everything speeded up, and all the little problems disappeared.

 

Seriously thou, one thing that might solve your problem is setting up a Group Policy with the internet security setting set to medium, and also adding the AQA site in as a trusted site. We had to do this with our LEAs webmail service as it needs a ActiveX control to edit messages, which just won't run unless we have it added as a trusted site.

Resolved.

 

Inheritance of policies and not checking the "site wide" default policy. Had the tick box checked to disable download of files.

 

However only recently occurred when we tried to resolve another issue.

 

Three states of change, either gray (assuming inherited from default) ticked to break inheritance and do what its told or white uncheck to disable and break from inheritance.

 

Not easy when you've spent 4 days trying to figure out if its profile based, ranger based, machines hating you, or little green men.

 

Thanks for the advice, but if it were not for the ability to monitor student activity via webtracker/ranger screen viewer, start menus and desktop information, we would like move away ourselves, after the distraught that Sophos/Ranger gave us.
