Ephelyon Posted June 9, 2015 Posted June 9, 2015 I currently have a floppy disk in my work jacket pocket containing a bootable x86 port of the 1979 Version 7 of UNIX. It accepts serial connections over a COM port and brings a tear to my eye every time. I am really quite sad.

IIRC the popular music distribution went: Vinyl > 8-track > cassette > CD > Digital PC install media went Floppy disk > CD-ROM > DVD-ROM > USB [i've had USB install media sent over] > Digital So... Floppy disks are the Vinyl of computer install media?

stevejp Posted June 10, 2015 Posted June 10, 2015 Aah - but don't forget the two differnt kinds of floppy disc - the 'genuine' 5.25" floppy and the 'new' 3.5" plastic version! (and, before anyone else says it, the first computer in my first classroom wewnt even furhter back - a BBC B micro with a cassette tape drive!) I am SO getting old...
