I want to know what happened to the floppies!

 

For goodness sake! We work hard to keep this forum professional and fit for viewing in primary schools! Smut!

I currently have a floppy disk in my work jacket pocket containing a bootable x86 port of the 1979 Version 7 of UNIX. It accepts serial connections over a COM port and brings a tear to my eye every time.

 

I am really quite sad.

Only in my late twenties , but the other day my 21 year old brother picked up a floppy disk from my garage and asked me "is this a vinyl?"

IIRC the popular music distribution went:

 

Vinyl > 8-track > cassette > CD > Digital

 

PC install media went

 

Floppy disk > CD-ROM > DVD-ROM > USB [i've had USB install media sent over] > Digital

 

 

So... Floppy disks are the Vinyl of computer install media?

Aah - but don't forget the two differnt kinds of floppy disc - the 'genuine' 5.25" floppy and the 'new' 3.5" plastic version! (and, before anyone else says it, the first computer in my first classroom wewnt even furhter back - a BBC B micro with a cassette tape drive!)
