Katy Posted November 25, 2020 Posted November 25, 2020 Quick question - can I set up an MDM without breaking the existing MDM? As it needs the Apple Push certificates etc... Basically - we currently use Meraki (free up to 100 devices) for our 50-odd iPads, and I want to set up InTune and move a single iPad over to it, for testing etc, before eventually moving the lot over. But I don't want to break everything by doing so.

If this is just for testing purposes you could also setup another location in Apple School Manager and upload a separate Apps and Books token to avoid any app deployment conflicts. 1

(Might of been added in the last year), if you can stick with Meraki for the time being i would. We use Mosyle, which is paid for but not the £££ that Jamf is!

We're going to be using InTune for Windows devices if/when we go 1:1 so was hoping to do it all in one place. We don't really use wallpapers or app layouts though so should do what we need (which is basically push apps, restrict a few bits, and set the wifi and trusted certificates)

I just found it very limiting!

I just found it very limiting! For iOS, iPadOS and macOS it still is....
Katy Posted November 25, 2020 Author Posted November 25, 2020 Well turns out it was easy, you can have multiple push certs and you can add multiple MDMs in School Manager, and then just move the device from one to the other. So far so good for testing. Next step is see if moving the device actually does anything besides change which MDM it looks at when it is reset.

You can do the same with VPP but... You will need to upgrade to App and Books as these use a location basewd token. One other important thing when you reset an iPad to switch from one MDM to another... If the device has been Supervised and backed up using iCloud, when you come to reset the iPad, if you choose restore from iCloud backup on the same iPad this will not pull down the new profile. The reason being is Apple's levels of security stop the profile being added. The trick with this is to restore from iCloud backup from another iPad, once you have signed in to it with a different Apple ID. If you have never used iCloud for backup you can ignore this.
