What’s changing

You can now deploy and manage Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW) via the Admin console. Previously, you had to use registry entries. This makes it easier to deploy and manage GCPW in your organization.

 

Why you’d use it

GCPW is an aspect of Enhanced desktop security for Windows that makes using Windows 10 devices with Google Workspace easier and more secure. Once set up, users can:

 

 

• Sign in to a Microsoft Windows 10 device using their Google Workspace or Cloud Identity credentials.
   
  
• Take advantage of security protections on Windows 10 devices, including 2-step verification (2SV) and login challenges.
   
  
• Access G Suite and other single sign-on (SSO) applications associated with their G Suite or Cloud Identity accounts without the need to re-enter their credentials.
  

 

With this launch, you can configure and manage GCPW using the Admin console. The previous system required registry entries to deploy GCPW. This could make it difficult for customers without standard software deployment tools to set up and update GCPW deployments.

 

Additional details

 

Device setup and management: To set up GCPW on a new device, you will download a GCPW install file customized for your company from the admin console. Once that file is installed, you’ll be able to manage GCPW settings in the Admin console. When a user logs in to a device managed with GCPW, the settings made in the Admin console will be fetched (note GCPW settings updates made in the Admin console may take up to one hour to be implemented on the device).

 

Settings available in the Admin console: You’ll be able to adjust all the same settings via the Admin console that you can via registry entries. That includes settings related to offline access, multiple account management, and more.

 

Working with previously configured registry entries: Deployments and settings made via the Admin console supersede registry entries. Customers who want to continue to use registry entries can leave GCPW settings in the admin console as “not configured.”
