Conundrum!!

OK, so the internet is down... but I can get on this website.

 

I can ping google, yahoo, bbc etc, but cannot access them.

 

I am the only person who can ping. Neither of my colleagues can do this...

 

I am through our unfiltered line, but the kids line isn't working either.

 

but why? Why can I only access edugeek? why can I ping but no-one else? Why isn't the internet working properly!!??

 

Also... I have an error with a few samsung printers... something about smart utilities... i think I will have a search for it! I want to go to the samsung website to look but can;t!

Local DNS issue? Though strange you can get to Edugeek. Then perhaps Edugeek is out to take over the world

 

edit: Actually that's a dumb statement if you can ping them,..............

If you have been to edugeek and those other sites recently on your pc the necessary DNS records are probably cached on your local computer which would allow you to access those sites without the DNS.

 

You can check the servers resolution ability be using the nslookup command line application which will tell you if the server can resolve the records.

You could try bypassing your local DNS servers by setting up you stations network adapter to temporarily use openDNS

 

208.67.222.222

208.67.220.220

 

So long as DNS traffic is not filtered this should get your system up and running, if it does you could add the above servers to your local DNS servers forwarders list to get the whole domain up without waiting for your provider to fix their DNS.

we did a tracert to yahoo and it picked up all the servers fine. It is most strange because it is on our own line and the borough line... just don't understand why some works and some doesn't (but most doesn't!)

those dns addresses didn't work. Normally it is set to get them automatically.
