How to implement OneDrive storage

We are looking into using OneDrive as out primary storage instead of traditional home directories on our file server.

 

What do people think is the best way of doing this? I don't the native OneDrive client is viable as it will result in endless amounts of synching every time a student signs in to a different computer. A workaround for this would be to configure the client to sync with a network drive, but this doesn't seem to be possible.

 

Ideally, I would map a drive directly to the user's OneDrive account, but this only seems possible using a third party utility such as IAM Cloud, and therefore introduces an additional risk of failure.

 

Any thoughts or suggestion on this?

Just install the onedrive client as a multi user option. Sign staff in once and its all good.

 

No need to map drives or complicate things really. You can enable files on demand to fix the "endless syncing"....

I'm pretty sure the files on demand setting isn't available for older versions of Windows 10 (2016). Obviously upgrading would be ideal but with a large number of clients, that's a longer term prospect and not an immediate solution.

You're correct, you need to be on 1709 or above.

 

You're right though, the sync before that isn't great and while there are other solutions we tried prior to upgrading, none really worked all that well. We just put in place an upgrade program (2000) devices. Took about a year but worth the effort.

Well, you have less than a year of MS support, presuming you're on LTSB, so you should be updating soon enough anyway...

Native OneDrive client works fine, we’ve got all students and staff using OneDrive with redirected folders for everyone. Don’t need to have it mapped as it’s pinned to the left hand side of File Explorer when signed in, otherwise if you really need it mapped you can do this via logon script with no third party tool needed.

 

Edit: Files on Demand enabled by default to save space.
