Google Classroom - provisioned users not appearing in 'invite student' search

Hi

We have moved from Teams to Google Classroom as our remote/home learning platform this year. We are currently keeping 365 for everything else including email and as such I have provisioned all our users across to Google so they use 365 authentication to login to GC. This is working quite well with the usual caveats about sending emails inside GC etc.

The one thing that is bugging me, and I'm sure it can be made to work, is the fact that when a students is missing from a class the teacher cannot search for users when they click the 'invite students' link. They can enter the full email address of the student who then appears in the search but if they do a name search nothing will appear. All the students are listed in the Google Directory Users list with correct first name, surname, email and when I search in the Google User list I can successfully find anyone..

Is there anyone else who has a hybrid setup like ours who has got this work at all please or is it something that needs say Gmail to work?

Many thanks

Simon
