rogerdnixon Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 I was at a school today coming into our Trust and we are just deploying G Suite there. On their network, every time someone logs into their G Suite account, after the username, you get a captcha to type in and then the password. I even got this on my personal device connected to their network. Happens 100% or the time. They use Smoothwall for filtering (we use Securly across most of the Trust - so not really familiar with Smoothwall), and I'm guessing it's something to do with that. Anyone got any idea why this is happening on their network and how to fix it? Thanks
TwistedHelixis Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 We had this a few years ago but I cant remember for the life of me why. I will dig through some of my old docs and see if I have anything written down.
rogerdnixon Posted September 23, 2020 Author Posted September 23, 2020 Thanks - any clues would be great.
Ditto Posted September 23, 2020 Posted September 23, 2020 I'm with @TwistedHelixis, I'm sure it's been covered before - and I thought it was on Edugeek, but possibly another forum. A quick search here brought up http://www.edugeek.net/forums/smoothwall-direct-support/192445-google-captcha.html. I've not gone through it in detail but might be a starting point.
rogerdnixon Posted September 23, 2020 Author Posted September 23, 2020 Thanks - Google search is fine - its just login. I've found lots of articles about search and correctly specifying the default search provider is the fix there - but this is between the username entry and the password entry.
TwistedHelixis Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Remembered what it was, but not how to fix the issue. It turned out that all schools going through the LA internet were also getting the Captcha issue. When the LA fixed whatever the issue was everything was fine again. Perhaps something based on the LA's IP / DNS was triggering the issue. Sorry I cant be more help
Ditto Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 Every bit of searching I've done on this suggests ultimately it comes down to an unpublished algorithm on Google's side that leads to this. @rogerdnixon, I hesitate to ask, as I am all to aware of your level of expertise, but have you talked it through with Google support?
rogerdnixon Posted September 24, 2020 Author Posted September 24, 2020 Yep - I've asked - they were not too much help. I've got the onsite IT company contacting Smoothwall to figure out whats wrong. We shall see (and then as soon as possible they will join the Trusts Securly agreement and the problem will vanish).
