Azure VM - sims.net

Hi all,

 

Is anyone using or looking to using this method?

 

We have a fully fledged remoteapp setup for staff to access sims.net on their laptops and desktops and from home with 2Fa enabled to keep it all secure.

 

The session host servers are now struggling with demand and im looking at possible alternative solutions.

 

Azure VM with sims.net installed and access to all clients, seems ideal as it removes all the servers and on costs and time to maintain remoteapp (connection broker, gateway, licensing, session hosts, failover etc...)

 

Pricing has also fallen and is now reasonable. Has anyone else looked to do this?

Not everything to the remote azure server, but I have often though of offloading the SQL to a database instance on Azure and running it through there, as the main need is always SQL on the servers (from what I can see)

I've looked at moving the sims server to Azure, we have been quoted and its not bad, but unsure how 3rd party applications would work like Edulink etc....

 

For the moment, if I could replace remoteapp with one or two VM clients in Azure, with a local instance of sims client and spec'd to allow the required concurrent connections, that'd do for the moment.

If you set up a site to site vpn with Azure then it just becomes another server on the network all be it with a potentially different differnet subnet and would probably be an idea to test latency.

im wondering if at that point you wouldnt just be better moving to an actual cloud mis like scholarpack?

I think I would just go hosted with SIMS, let them have of the ownership and associated costs of managing/maintaining the server infrastructure and then look at moving to a cloud MIS asap. Edited September 22, 2020 by djm968

Seriously, just change MIS. You are trying to fit a square peg in a round hole.

 

We moved away from Sims recently and have a cloud based, two factor authenticating MIS with IP restrictions out of the box.

Move to a cloud based MIS. Cheaper, more cost effective, better cross platform compatibility.

I moved from a SIMS school to a Bromcom one. It's like you've made a step in the ascent of man in comparison.
